As the internet becomes more relevant in everyday business transactions, Bank of Bennington is committed to safeguarding our customers’ financial information. With our customers being our top priority, we utilize many important safety procedures to protect all of your confidential information. We have implemented cybersecurity technology into our system to ensure your safety and protection. The following are currently in place at our locations to protect against cybersecurity breaches:

  • Username and Password – Access to any of our computers require an authorized username and password to logon
  • Timeout – Our computers are designed to log out the user after several minutes of inactivity requiring them to reenter their password
  • Encryption – Our email has the capability of encrypting messages to ensure their confidentially to each of our customers
  • Firewalls – Prevents unauthorized access to our systems
  • Virus Protection – Anti-virus protection technology is implemented to detect and prevent viruses from entering our network
We ensure you as identity theft and cyber-crimes continue to be a growing concern, our efforts to prevent them are growing too. We will continue to implement up-to-date procedures to keep your confidential information safe.

Security Tips

As we make an effort to protect your confidential information, we encourage you to do the same during your day to day lives and on your online networks to protect your identity and assets. Below are several tips to help you do this:

  • Keep your password safe:
    • * Change your password regularly. Do not use your real name, username, or any personally identifying information
    • * Have a different password for different accounts
    • * Use a variety of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols in your passwords
    • * Do not write your passwords down
  • Check your online account regularly to look for unauthorized charges. Contact us immediately if you notice a fraudulent debit card charge on your account, 402-238-2245. Please call 1-800-264-5578 after hours.
  • Before giving out personal information, ask the business how they will use and protect your information.
  • Refrain from giving identifying information over the phone or internet to someone you don’t know.
  • Always shred your financial statements and documents containing personal/identifying information.
  • Get a copy of your credit report annually and review it carefully. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act requires each credit reporting companies to provide you a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. This is available at www.annualcreditreport.com or call 877-322-8228.
  • Keep all your information up-to-date with Bank of Bennington. Including your current phone number, mailing address, and email addresses.
  • Never give our personal/identifying information if you don’t feel comfortable. Call the company to make sure they are actually requesting this information from you.
  • Use secure websites for transactions and shopping. Only shop with merchants you and trust while shopping online. Look for “secure transaction” symbols before completing transactions. Symbols may include: a lock symbol in the lower right hand corner of our web browser, or “https://...” In the address bar of the website where the “s” indicates “secured” meaning the web page uses encryption.
  • Be cautious of suspicious emails. Do not open attachments, click on links, or reply to emails from suspicious or unknown senders.

Online Banking Security Tips

Protecting your personal and financial information outside of our network is equally as important to us. We have implemented several security procedures to ensure your protection for your online banking experience.

  • Each customer must have a unique username and a password that can be changed at any time for security purposes.
    • * Password must be 8-17 characters long with a letter and number
  • Multi-factor authentication in the form of challenge questions.
  • If incorrect login and password are given three times, your account access will be denied until contacting the bank.
  • A session timer tracks your activity during our online banking experience. 20 minutes of inactivity will result in an automatic logout.
  • Once you are locked out of online banking, you are also locked out of mobile banking.

Mobile Banking Security Tips

If you use our mobile banking app, please keep these tips in mind:

  • If incorrect login and password are given three times, your account access will be denied until contacting the bank.
  • Once you are locked out of mobile banking, you are also locked out of online banking.
  • Use passcode or phone lock function on your mobile device.
  • Never disclose personal/identifying information via text message, phone call, or email from your mobile device.
  • If you lose your mobile device or change your mobile device number, contact us to remove the old number and add your new number.

If You Become a Victim of Identity Theft

If you suspect that someone has been using your personal information, contact the following:
  • The Bank
  • The fraud departments of the three major credit bureaus:
    • * Experian 888-397-3742
    • * Transunion 800-680-7289
    • * Equifax 800-685-1111 to obtain a copy of your report or 888-766-0008 for fraud assistance
  • The creditors of any accounts that have been misused
  • The local police to file a report
  • Contact the FTC, which maintains the Identity Theft Data Clearinghouse and provides information to identity theft victims. You can call toll-free 1-877-ID-THEFT (1-877-438-4338), or visit https://identitytheft.gov/
  • If you believe your SSN has been comprised, you need to contact and complete forms for the IRS. They have a Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft.
  • Cancel/close any existing accounts held in your name and open new accounts
